Various types of warts—including common warts, flat warts and plantar warts—stem from distinct strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can emerge on the hands, face, feet or genital areas.
What is it?
Warts are benign, rough bumps caused by HPV entering the skin through cuts or breaks. These raised growths, resembling blisters, can appear anywhere on the body. Once the HPV virus enters the skin, it triggers the rapid growth of cells on the outer layer, leading to the formation of warts. These growths can vary in appearance, ranging from small, flesh-colored bumps to larger, rough-textured lesions. Warts can be unsightly and cause discomfort, especially if they develop in weight-bearing areas like the soles of the feet.
Although warts are common and typically harmless, they can be persistent and challenging to eliminate without proper treatment. Various factors—like a weakened immune system, genetics and environmental factors—can increase the risk of developing warts or make them more resistant to treatment. While harmless, many patients opt for removal due to their contagious nature and simply not wanting them on their skin!
