A viral skin infection caused by the poxvirus commonly leads to the formation of painless, firm and round bumps, usually benign.
What is it?
Molluscum contagiosum— a viral skin infection prevalent among children but also affecting adults—presents as small, pearly or flesh-colored bumps, usually the size of a pencil eraser. This condition is often transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, such as sexual contact or touching the skin. While it is highly contagious, molluscum contagiosum poses minimal health risks, although it is potentially irritating due to its characteristic appearance.
How is it treated?
Treatment is tailored to various factors, such as your overall health status and the extent of the lesions on the body. While we advocate for allowing the virus to resolve, typically taking around six to nine months naturally, we understand your desire for a more efficient, effective solution.
Our experienced dermatologists can assist you through this process by offering interventions like cryotherapy or curettage (scraping and burning the skin) to remove the lesions. Additionally, we can administer chemical treatments to aid in their elimination.
It's important to note that achieving optimal results may require additional treatments. Let’s start your journey today. Call the Skin Care Center, and we’ll schedule an appointment in Lake Forest, Glenview or Chicago, Illinois.
