Spider veins are damaged, visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins, often forming clusters resembling webs or branches, can appear anywhere, though they are commonly found on the legs, feet, or face. While these veins are harmless, they could result in swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Spider veins are more prevalent in women than in men and are often inherited. They are also frequently seen in individuals who are stationary for extended periods, those who are pregnant, and individuals who are overweight due to poor circulation.
Spider veins occur when the valves within your veins become weak. Various factors can contribute to their development, such as sunlight, hormonal fluctuations, past vein surgery, excessive exposure to UV rays, or injuries.
Occasionally, the presence of spider veins could hint at a more severe condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Our board-certified dermatologists at our dermatology clinic can help determine if you are at risk of developing CVI.
