What is it?

Affecting between 40 to 50 million Americans, acne is one of the most common skin conditions we treat at The Skin Care Center. Acne is caused by overprotective or enlarged sebaceous glands (oil glands). Bacteria grow in these areas creating congestion in the pores and causing breakouts in the skin. Acne is not just found among teens but commonly found in adults as well.

Changes in hormones, such as those occurring during puberty or menstruation, can trigger acne breakouts. Additionally, genetic predispositions play a role, meaning if your parents had acne, you're more likely to experience it. Certain medications, including some corticosteroids and hormonal treatments, can also contribute to acne development. Acne can appear on the face, neck, chest and back. The severity of acne can vary widely, with some individuals experiencing only occasional mild breakouts, while others may endure persistent, severe acne that leads to scarring and emotional distress. Our board-certified dermatologists are dedicated to treating patients in Lake Forest, Glenview and Chicago, Illinois.

How is it treated?

Acne, though not a serious concern, can significantly impact your confidence. Our goal is to help you heal existing acne, stop new breakouts from forming, and to prevent the occurrence of acne scarring. During your in-person consultation, our board-certified dermatologists will customize a treatment plan that best suits your skin.

We use the latest approved medications and skin care as well as other natural and homeopathic treatments to safely and effectively rid you of acne. For severe or aggressive acne, we offer Accutane and newer prescription regimens. Hormonal acne requires different treatment options.

We also offer treatments for patients who suffer from stubborn acne scars. We have a wide range of options from chemical peels, microneedling, ablative laser treatments, and fillers.

No matter the treatment method, our goal is to support you in overcoming acne and preventing future breakouts, ensuring your skin health and confidence flourish.
