Angiomas and hemangiomas are noncancerous growths caused by an abnormal clustering of blood vessels. They often appear as red or purple lesions on the skin.
What is it?
Angiomas, characterized by small, raised growths, can appear anywhere on the body. While generally harmless and not requiring medical intervention, removal may be necessary if discomfort arises or if its development is in injury-prone areas.
Hemangiomas—more common in infants and younger children—can appear externally on the skin or internally in organs like the brain or liver. External hemangiomas often resemble red, raised marks, earning them the nickname "strawberry hemangiomas."
Internal hemangiomas may go unnoticed and require additional diagnostic evaluations.
How is it treated?
Hemangiomas, whether appearing on the skin or internal organs, are typically managed through various treatment approaches depending on their location, size and potential complications. Treatment options for superficial hemangiomas on the skin's surface may include observation, topical medications, laser therapy or surgical removal for those causing discomfort or aesthetic concerns. They can be left alone if not bothersome. Internal hemangiomas, such as those in the liver or brain, may necessitate a different approach. In some cases—particularly if they're causing complications like bleeding or organ dysfunction—we may suggest medical intervention such as medication or embolization.
