Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizes light and photosensitive medication to manage conditions such as acne, psoriasis and skin cancer.
What is it?
PDT is a medical treatment that involves a photosensitizing agent (a drug activated by light) and a specific type of light to target and treat various skin conditions.
During PDT, the photosensitizing agent is applied to the skin or administered orally or intravenously, depending on the condition being treated. The agent is absorbed by cells in the target area. Then, a specific wavelength of light is applied to the area, activating the photosensitizing agent. This activation process generates reactive oxygen species, which selectively destroy abnormal cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
PDT is commonly used to treat conditions such as actinic keratosis (precancerous skin lesions), acne, sun-damaged skin, certain types of skin cancer (e.g., basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and other dermatological conditions. It’s often a preferred treatment for its ability to accurately target affected areas and minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Additionally, PDT is considered a minimally invasive treatment option with relatively low risk and minimal downtime compared to surgical procedures. Often, patients opt for this treatment to avoid major surgical scars.
What to expect
During PDT, patients may experience sensations of warmth or tingling at the treatment site. Following the procedure, the treated area may become red, swollen or sensitive to light for a few days. In some cases, the skin may peel or crust as it heals. It's important to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your healthcare provider to help manage discomfort and promote healing. The specific treatment regimen and outcomes may vary depending on the condition being treated and individual patient factors. Our board-certified dermatologists and specialists will discuss the expected outcomes and any potential risks or side effects associated with PDT before initiating treatment.
