Excisions remove entire lesions, while biopsies obtain samples for analysis, aiding diagnosis and treatment planning in dermatology. Excisions are used to remove skin lesions and get rid of a potentially harmful or unwanted lesion on your body. Skin lesions that could present a risk include squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma or malignant melanoma. Additionally, excisions are performed to get rid of benign (non-cancerous) lesions.
A biopsy is when tissue is removed for laboratory analysis. This diagnostic procedure involves taking a tissue sample for microscopic examination to identify skin abnormalities. Biopsies help diagnose conditions like moles, lesions and rashes. Our Skin Care Center’s board-certified dermatologists commit to communicating biopsy results within one to two weeks.
