As wounds heal, the body creates collagen to close the gap, forming a scar as the skin reconnects. There are several types of scars we treat:
- Hypertrophic scars are raised, caused by excess collagen production, often appearing red and thickened initially, but may diminish over time.
- Atrophic scars are indented when the skin fails to regenerate tissue, commonly seen with acne.
- Keloids are bulky scars that grow beyond the original wound. They are triggered by excessive collagen production, are more common in darker skin tones and don't fade naturally.
- Contracture scars tighten over large skin areas, like burns, restricting movement as they mature.
Before recommending treatment, one of our experienced providers at The Skin Care Center will evaluate your assesses your scar type, how long it’s been there, and will check for any underlying issues, such as skin cancer or atypical cells.
Usually, a visual inspection enables us to detect most scars. Sometimes, a specific type of scar might need further examination. In such cases, we may perform a skin biopsy for detailed analysis in our lab. Once identified, we offer various treatments. Schedule an appointment with one of our Skin Care Center’s board-certified dermatologists or specialists in Lake Forest, Glenview or Chicago, Illinois, for a precise diagnosis and effective treatment.
