What is it?

Dandruff, a common scalp condition, produces white flakes of dead skin and itching. Causes include dry skin, reactions to hair products and a yeast-like fungus. It's common in adults, especially males, but doesn't reflect poor hygiene. Despite how common it is, dandruff can cause discomfort and embarrassment. However, it's crucial to highlight that dandruff does not indicate poor hygiene, though it can appear more pronounced if you neglect regular hair washing.

The Skin Care Center’s board-certified dermatologists in Lake Forest, Glenview and Chicago, Illinois, offer vital support in managing and treating dandruff. They conduct thorough scalp assessments and may recommend additional tests to identify the root cause. Treatment options may include medicated shampoos, creams or lotions, with stronger prescriptions available for stubborn cases. Our board-certified team of providers can also provide guidance on proper hair care and lifestyle adjustments. Regular follow-up appointments help ensure treatment effectiveness and allow adjustments as needed for optimal management.

How is it treated?

Dandruff is typically treated through medicated shampoos, topical medications and lifestyle adjustments recommended by dermatologists. These treatments aim to reduce scalp irritation, control the overgrowth of yeast-like fungus and alleviate flaking. Compliance with treatment recommendations is essential for effective management of dandruff. Patients are advised to use medicated shampoos as directed, typically applying them to the scalp and leaving them on for a few minutes before rinsing. Topical medications, such as creams or lotions, should be applied to the affected areas according to the dermatologist's instructions. In addition to following treatment protocols, patients are encouraged to adopt healthy hair care practices, such as washing their hair regularly with a gentle shampoo, avoiding harsh hair products and managing stress levels.
