An enduring autoimmune condition characterized by the loss of skin pigment in patches, stemming from the immune system's attack on and depletion of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment.
What is it?
Vitiligo is a persistent condition resulting in patches of skin turning pale white due to melanin depletion. This depletion leads to a loss of natural color and the formation of white areas called "macules" or patches. These macules are smaller than five millimeters, while some patches are much larger.
Some individuals with vitiligo also experience hair turning white in affected areas. Typically starting when a person enters their 20s, vitiligo mainly appears on the face, arms, hands or feet. This condition progresses over time, resulting in further depigmentation of the skin.
How is it treated?
The Skin Care Center offers a range of therapeutic approaches to effectively address skin pigment conditions. Medications like corticosteroids and specialized skin creams can be prescribed to target and alleviate the symptoms associated with irregular pigmentation. Additionally, light therapy—which involves exposure to specific light wavelengths—can enhance skin coloration and texture.
Our treatment options include pigmentation therapy, which utilizes advanced techniques and formulations to restore skin pigmentation by stimulating melanin production and evening out skin tone. Laser therapy offers a precise and targeted approach to address pigmentation issues, delivering controlled energy pulses to the affected areas to encourage cell regeneration and pigment dispersion. A combination of genetics, biochemical, and neurogenic factors causes the condition to materialize.
Generalized vitiligo is the randomized scattering of depigmentation throughout the face and body. It is the most common form of vitiligo.
Universal vitiligo is a condition where 80% or more of the body is depigmented.
Focal vitiligo consists of localized patches where pigmentation is missing.
Acrofacial vitiligo typically occurs on the hands and face.
