What is it?
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that originates in melanocyte cells, which give skin its pigment. When overexposed to ultraviolet light, like the sun, tanning beds and sun lamps, damage occurs in the DNA of melanocytes. Over time, this sun damage can lead to skin mutations and severe skin cancer. Melanoma can rapidly spread to other affected areas of the body. If it isn’t diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be fatal. Early detection of melanoma and annual skin examinations are essential to warding off any signs of melanoma.
In addition to your yearly skin assessment by a certified dermatologist at our clinic, perform routine self-checks using the ABCDE method below. Seek dermatological advice promptly if you notice:
A - Asymmetrical shape
B – Irregularly shaped borders
C – Varied amounts of colors from one region to another
D - Diameter is larger than the size of a pencil eraser
E - Change in size, shape or color from a previous skin exam
Minimize sun exposure and protect skin from harmful UV rays to lower melanoma risk. Enjoy the sun responsibly with SPF 30+ sunscreen.
How is it treated?
