Keloid Scar Overview

Keloids are large, raised scars that occur at the site of a past wound or trauma. They can appear anywhere on the body but more often show up on the upper chest, shoulders, ears, or cheeks. Keloid scars are benign (non-cancerous) but can be itchy and sometimes painful.

What Causes Keloid Scars?

It’s unclear what causes keloids. Research shows that family history may play a role. Individuals with darker skin tones are also at a greater risk for keloid scars.

Are There Different Types of Keloid Scars?

Keloids can show up in various sizes and shapes. The scars are typically larger than the original wound itself thanks to excessive healing. Occasionally, keloids can appear when no trauma has occurred.
